When the African village expands and its herds of cows and goats grow in number, SHALUKU - the guinea fowl, loses her nest and her eggs to the intruding shepherds. Other animals like the hares, squirrels, snakes and hyenas have similar stories. Ironically, after destroying the plants and animals, it is the village that finds itself stuck in a barren land. The village council takes responsibility in its attempt to reverse the situation.

What is Unique About SHALUKU?

The book describes the unique animals, plants and landscape of a specific region in the Horn of Africa. Two guinea fowl - Shaluku and her mate Laluku are its main characters. It also recounts the social, cultural and economic activities of the village around which the animals live. It intertwines the story of the animals with that of the villagers.
